springtime in Fresno.

Last weekend we went drove up to Fresno.
The weather was gorgeous the entire weekend! on Sunday we were able to take a drive down the beautiful Blossom Trail and take some great pictures:

Sunday evening we had a great homemade dinner of pizzas, grilled swordfish, grilled garlic ciabatta bread, lemony asparagus, roasted brussel sprouts, and my pear & apple crumble.

We also opened up a fantastic bottle of wine: Winston Hill Rutherford 2007.
Which is actually the same bottle we opened with Aaron's parents after Aaron and I got engaged.
It. Is. Delicious.

Moksha Yoga LA's 30 Day Challenge: day-by-day

[photo from Moksha Yoga LA's website]

Day #1:
Time: 4:30pm
Class: 75 minute Moksha
Instructor: Ezmy
Challenges: nothing major, just taking it easy and sticking with Ezmy's suggestion for today's class "slow and steady wins the race". Knowing I will be doing 30 consecutive days worth of yoga, I wanted to make sure I didn't overdo it the first day.

Day #2:
Time: 6:30pm
Class: 75 minute Moksha
Instructor: Ezmy
Challenges: just getting to the studio. I had initially planned on taking the 9:30am class but missed it due to a migraine. I then decided to go to the 12 o'clock class, but missed it as well due to the migraine. I was finally able to make it to the studio for the 6:30pm class and feel AMAZING now! I'm so glad Simone was flexible enough with her schedule to come with me when I was finally able to go.

Day #3:
Time: 8:00am
Class: 60 minute Moksha with Music
Instructor: Matt
Challenges: waking up early enough to make the class. but we did!

Day #4:
Time: 1:30pm
Class Duration: 1hr
Challenges: not being able to make it to a Moksha Yoga LA class on day #4 since we were in Fresno; luckily Taryn teaches an awesome class and I was able to get one in while out of town.

Day #5:
Time: 6:30pm
Class: 75 minute Moksha Flow
Instructor: Matt
Challenges: I was originally signed up to do the 4:30 class, but it took us a little longer to get back to LA from Fresno that we thought. So I switched to the 6:30 class. I could tell my body was a bit tired but WOW was this class difficult for me. I survived, but I definitely passed on a few vinyasas!  I'm interested to see how I feel in the morning.

Day #6:
Time: 1:30pm
Class: 60 minute Moksha with Music
Instructor: Joe
Challenges: My muscles being tired and my hip flexors being sore. Most of that went away after a few minutes in the hot room and I was able to have a great class.

Day #7:
Time: 4:30pm
Class: 75 minute Yang/Yin
Instructor: Joe
Challenges: none! felt great today; strong and energized. it was a great class.

Day #8:
Time: 1:30 pm
Class: 60 minute Moksha
Instructor: Matt
Challenges: none really, was planning on going to the 4:30pm class but was able to make the 1:30pm. My hip flexors were still really sore, but class itself was great!

Day #9:
-missed-

Day #10:
-missed-

Day #11:
- missed

Day #12:
Time: 12:00pm
Class: 60 minute Moksha
Instructor: Joe
Challenges: very difficult class. my balance was off, most of the poses were incredibly difficult for me and I was extremely tired. Which, is too be expected after missing 3 days and drinking lots of beer over the weekend! Looking forward to doubling-up a few times in the coming week to make up for the 3 classes missed over the weekend.

Day #13:
Time: 9:30am
Class: 90 minute Moksha
Instructor: Matt

Day #14:
Time: 4:30pm
Class: 75 minute Yang/Yin with music
Instructor: Joe

Moksha Yoga LA's 30 Day Challenge

[photo from Moksha Yoga LA's website]

Today was day #1 of Moksha Yoga LA's 30 day challenge!
30 days. 30 Moksha classes.  and a looooot of sweat.

Simone and I signed up and are planning on being each others accountability so that we get through the month. Its going to be challenging and I'm sure there will be some days that it will be difficult to make it to class, but I'm excited about the whole experience.

I'm so glad I have such an awesome friend like Simone who is accompanying me on this [exhausting] journey!

school.

today begins week #3 of the Spring 2012 school semester.
I am really enjoying both of my classes; but they are definitely keeping me busy.

I'm doing much better with studying this semester (with the exception of writing this blog post when I should be going over my Chemistry flashcards) and I think that has a lot to do with my two awesome professors, the fact that I scored a Santa Monica neighborhood parking pass and no longer have to fight with the hellacious SMC parking garage (thank you Simone!!), and I actually really like the subject matter of my classes.

[wine and geology, because, why not?]

[ziggy snoozing on my lap while I study chemistry]

[7am: morning coffee, sleepy puppy, and my geology book]

 [chemistry]

[I wonder how many students keep their note cards in a Louis Vuitton box?]

[sipping Yogi tea out of my my Chicago mug while studying the Theory of Plate Tectonics]

more beer.

We were on a beer-high after the Pliny the Younger tasting last Monday... and the week only got better on Tuesday!

Our friends from the Midwest surprised us with a package of beers that we cannot get here on the West Coast!

and, one of the beers was a Bell's Hopslam!
Which is essentially the Midwest/East coast version of Pliny the Elder. This beer was only in our house for 2 days before we couldnt wait anymore and popped it open. It was sooooo good! and, as hard as it is for me to admit it, I actually think I like it better than Pliny the Elder. The honey really brought this IPA to a whole new level, I loved it.

the package also included:
- 1 Founder's - KBS (Kentucky Breakfast Stout) (2011)
which just so happens to be ranked #10 on BeerAdvocate. Aaron also got a bit giddy when he saw that one in the package, apparently he had been drooling of that beer for quite some time; we just couldnt get our hands on it! We havent tried this one yet... but are super excited to pop it open soon.

- 1 Great Lakes Brewing Co- Barrel-Aged Blackout Stout
I am really looking forward to opening this one. Lately I have really been enjoying Stouts and this one sounds fantastic.

- 1 Brew Kettle- White Rajah IPA
we popped this one open a few days after the Bell's Hopslam. Its quite tasty and Aaron and I both really enjoyed it! Not nearly as complex as the Hopslam; but delicious nonetheless. Its a shame we cant get this beer more easily!

- 1 Hoppin' Frog- BORIS Royale Russian Imperial Stout
this stout was fantastic. soooo yummy. I loved each and every sip of this beer!

we have some pretty awesome out-of-state, fellow beer lover friends :)

President's Day.

We spent our President's Day in Orange County.
My brother got the heads up that a nearby gastropub was tapping a keg of the rare and wonderful (and #1 beer according to BeerAdvocate): Pliny the Younger.

We got up early and headed south so that we could drop Ziggy off at my brothers apartment before heading over to the gastropub in the city of Orange.
Ziggy spent the entire drive to Irvine doing this:

we made our way over to Haven, a gastropub that none of us had been to, but had heard a lot about.

We were expecting a line, but wow! The line went from the front of the building alllll the way down the side of the building and into the parking lot behind it. They were tapping the keg at 11am and we arrived at 10:30am or so. Apparently people had started lining up as early as 8am and people continued to line up well after we got there. We had heard the cut off was around 100-120 people... so we waited anxiously to see if we would be one of the lucky ones to get in.

Not only were we one of the lucky ones; we were one of the last 10 people to get in! After Aaron, my brother and I were given tasting tickets we heard the owner of the gastropub tell the manager that they only had 5 more tickets left!

The place was so packed that initially Elliott, Aaron and myself were spit up and had to sit at random people's tables. After about 30 or 45 minutes we were able to sit together and around that same time this showed up in front of me:

[the Russian River tasting flight, with: Pliny the Elder,
Blind Pig, Russian River IPA, and PLINY THE YOUNGER!]

[a couple up-close shots of the infamous beer]

The beer was fantastic. Anything Russian River does is amazing, but I was truly impressed with Pliny the Younger. I am SO glad that Elliott heard about the tasting and that we were able to actually try it. It was the best $17 tasting flight, ever!

We ended up ordering food after we enjoyed our flights. Their "gourmet bar food" was fantastic and they had plenty of veggie friendly options on their menu.
The owner was friendly, the manager was especially friendly and personable, and they really handled the chaos of turning away the MANY people still in line when they ran out of tasting tickets. I was really impressed with the entire experience because it could have easily been hectic and unpleasant. Points to Haven's for such a successful tapping!

Haven's is actually located a few blocks from The Bruery Provisions...so I have a feeling we will be paying another visit there again very soon.

pear & apple crumble.

last week we had several pears and apples from our produce delivery that needed to be used, so I made this DELICIOUS pear & apple crumble.

its super easy to make and is really a crowd pleaser (I made it again last night for our small dinner party and it got rave reviews).
If you're looking for an easy, refreshing dessert- this is a great recipe for any occasion!

Pear & Apple Crumble (adapted from The Pioneer Woman's Pear Crisp)

Filling Ingredients:
2-3 pears
2-3 apples
2/3 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt

Topping Ingredients
1-1/2 cup flour
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 cup chopped pecans and walnuts
1 stick butter, melted

Preparation Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Peel, core, and dice pears & apples. Place into a bowl and stir together with 2/3 cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and pecans & walnuts. Stir together. Drizzle melted butter gradually, stirring with a fork as you go until all combined.
Pour pear & apple mixture into a baking dish; top with crumb topping.
Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, or until topping is golden brown.

Not only does this taste fantastic; but it will have your house smelling great too!

instagram.

I, very recently, discovered the instagram app on my iPhone.
as soon as I got the hang of it I started taking tons of photos... here are a few from the past week or so:

its a really fun, entertaining app!
and Ziggy makes its pretty easy to take cute photos of him being lazy :)

thoughts on "cleanses".

Its no secret that "cleanses" are the new "thing".
I'm pretty sure just about everyone has either done a cleanse, contemplated doing a cleanse, or know someone who is currently on a cleanse.

I'm going to be honest: I have been intrigued, yet skeptical of these "cleanses" ever since hearing about them a few years ago. I just like food way too much to not eat for a few days, a week, or even a month! Over the past few years I know people who have done The Lemonade Diet, The Master Cleanse, a "juice diet", a "liquid diet", and there are several cleanses out there where you spend hundreds on dollars for these pre-made "juices" to be delivered to your door.

Last semester, for one of my Nutrition classes we were given a project:
pick a "fad" diet, note the "hype" and claims that the diet offers, and then do extensive research on the SCIENCE behind the claims to find out if its all its cracked up to be. and if its even healthy!

My group picked cleanses, specifically: The Master Cleanse.

What is The Master Cleanse?
"The Master Cleanse is a modified juice fast that permits no food. There are three parts to the regimen. Each morning one drinks a quart of water with 2 teaspoons of salt or a cup of herbal laxative tea. This is followed by six to twelve lemonade drinks during the day. Finally, a cup of herbal laxative tea is taken in the evening. The lemonade is made from purified or spring water, fresh squeezed lemon juice, organic maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper herbal pills can be substituted for the cayenne pepper in the lemonade. The alleged purpose is to "detoxify" the body and remove excess fat. The regimen is followed for a minimum of ten days." - Wikipedia

What does The Master Cleanse (and most cleanses) claim?
- Stop Cravings
- Break Bad Habits
- Increase Will Power
- Build Confidence
- Regain Energy
- Detoxify Your Body
- Rest Your System
- Eliminate Fat
- Improve Your Health
- Regain Balance in PH
- Positive Mental Attitude
- Promote Longevity
- Transition to Raw Food
*this list was taken directly off of the MasterCleanse.org website

sounds enticing, right? You mean, all I have to do is basically drink lemonade for [at least] 10 days and I can achieve all of these benefits!?!?

No wonder so many people begin these "cleanses" blindly, without doing any research on them. The benefits sounds too good to be true!
and guess what?!? they are.

So now, lets look at what health professionals and doctors are saying about these cleanses. Keep in mind, these are DOCTORS and HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, you know... people who are actually educated and knowledgeable about what is healthy and necessary for our bodies.
Glenn D. Braunstein, MD, the chairman of the Department of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, says:
“Diets like the Master Cleanse are stressful on your body and cause nutritional deficiencies, electrolyte imbalances, difficulty concentrating and other problems….The colon cleans itself by shedding old cells about every three days, making colon cleansing unnecessary.”

Pamela Peeke, MD, the medical correspondent for the Discovery Health Channel says:
“Flushes and cleanses, like the Master Cleanse has no scientific basis and are ‘pure nonsense’. Cleansing your body of toxins is unnecessary, because you body has the ability to rid itself of toxins with the kidneys, liver, and immune system.”

Samuel Klein, MD, the director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the medical school of Washington University in St Louis, says:
“There is no evidence that diets like the Master Cleanse remove toxins from your body or provide you with any health benefits. … your body removes toxins naturally.” He also warns that “fasting and juice cleanses can deplete muscle tissue, which can reduce the size and function of your heart, kidneys, and liver. “

John Ellis, MD, says:
“Master Cleanse dieters will experience the unfortunate loss of muscle due to rapid weight loss…. After the diet, when you re-gain the weight you’ll end up with more fat than you started with AND less muscle.”

Dr. Michael Picco, a consultant on gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic was asked a series of questions regarding the Master Cleanse in a CNN.com article called “Mayo Doctor Is No Fan Of Cleanses”, here are his answers:

Do cleanses help you lose weight quickly?
“Any weight loss you get is not real. It’s due to loss of fluid and waste and it is potentially harmful since it is not done with the proper well-balanced diet and exercise.”

Do cleanses have any real benefits?
“No. The whole basis to this cleansing business is people say it can help things like the immune system, fatigue, and depression and it can clean the toxins out of the colon and it can aid in losing weight. There is really no evidence to that at all. Sometimes those cleanses could actually be quite harmful, too."

Is there any upside to a cleanse?
“There is really no good evidence based upon any good research that cleanses make a difference. The FDA doesn’t regulate these [cleansing] products because they are considered a part of the supplements category.”

            How can cleansing be harmful?
“Cleansing can make existing conditions, like hemorrhoids, worse and can increase dehydration, malnutrition, and fatigue.”

Is there ever a time when the color needs to be cleansed?
“There is no need to cleanse the colon; the colon does its own job cleansing bacteria. There are billions of bacteria in the colon, and they work in a symbiotic way to help with various different colon functions. The colon does a good job of changing its lining. The colon works quite well and does not a cleanse to rid itself of any toxins.”

            The bottom line on cleanses?
“The bottom line is that there isn’t any evidence that these work. The people claiming they do have evidence that it works are NOT correct. They can make these claims simply because these cleanses are not regulated. I think people need to know this before they believe these claims; they need to know there is a downside as well.”

Linda Bacon, PhD, a San Francisco City College Nutrition Professor called The Master Cleanse a “deprivation diet” in a health.com article called “How Crash Diets, Like the Master Cleanse, Harm Your Health andHeart”.

She went on to say “people go on fasts, yo-yo diets, detox programs, and ‘cleanses’ without realizing that there are serious consequences to weight loss and nutrient restriction.” And many of these “Master Cleansers unwittingly end up harming their health, and possibly their heart.

Bacon says that “there is absolutely no benefit to fasting or detoxing… extreme diets are simply bad for your and they don’t work.”

In the same health.com article, Cardiologist Isadore Rosenfeld, MD, a professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City opposes crash diets; which is defined as consuming less than 1200 calories per day. He is also against detox plans like the Master Cleanse. Rosenfeld says “low calorie regimens are based on the false theory that the body needs help eliminating waste”. He says that “rapid weight loss (a desirable side effect of these diets) can slow your metabolism, leading to future weight gain, and deprive your body of essential nutrients.”

Dr Rosenfeld says “A crash diet one wont hurt your heart… but crash dieting repeatedly increases your risk of heart attacks.”

The Master Cleanse was called a “starvation diet” in the MSNBC.com article “Experts warn of detox diet dangers”.

The article goes on to quote Lona Sandon, a Dallas Dietician and spokesperson for the American Heart Association that in addition to “Vitamin A deficiencies, muscle breakdown and blood-sugar problems…. A person can actually weaken their body’s ability to fight infections and inflammation”.

Dr Nasir Moloo, a gastroenterologist with Capital Gastroenterology Consultants Medical Group in Sacramento, CA says that “there is no evidence that these types of diets are necessary or helpful.”

Sandon, the Dallas Dietician also says that “by attempting to flush out the ‘bad stuff’ from our intestines you’re also flushing out the good bacteria that keep the intestines healthy”.

Susan Moores, a Registered Dietician, nutrition consultant, and another spokesperson for the American Heart Association says, “The side effects of prolonged, severe calorie restriction can include headache, fatigue, irritability, aches and pains. While believers claim they feel lighter and more energetic, studies on starvation show that the longer you fast, the more lethargic and less focused you become. Because most of these diets (such as The Master Cleanse) contain very little protein, it can be difficult for the body to rebuild lost muscle tissue.”

Dr. Ed Zimney, MD, medical director of Health Talk in Seattle, describes The Master Cleanse as “basically a starvation diet” in Healthand Medical News article “Master Cleanse Diet = Master SCAM”.

In this article, Dr Zimney breaks down the components of The Master Cleanse diet. He explains that the diet is water, “which is essential for life, but is of no nutritional value.”
The next major component is Maple Syrup, which is “the sole source of calories in the diet and prevents you from starving at a faster rate than if it were not included.”
Then, you add lemons. Dr. Zimney asks what does a lemon contain that makes it so important? The answer is NOTHING!”.
He says that The Master Cleanse drink is just a form of lemonade made with Maple Syrup instead of plain sugar.
And then, lastly, comes the cayenne pepper. That Dr Zimney says only serves the purpose of “irritating the lining of the GI tract to potentially cause diarrhea.”

Dr. Zimney ends his article with this quote:
“In summary, the Master Cleanse program is basically a way to starve yourself, with just enough sugar to keep you going for a few days. The lemon juice and cayenne pepper add nothing.

If you don’t eat for a few weeks, yes- you’ll lose weight.
And if you don’t eat for a few months? you’ll die. “

I think our research speaks for itself.
I would HIGHLY recommend NOT jumping on the uneducated bandwagon and doing these non-sense cleanses. They are NOT healthy and, in actuality, can be extremely dangerous to your long-term health.

If you want to lose weight, its really rather simple: eat more fruits & veggies, eat more whole grains, reduce your intake of saturated fats, sweets and processed foods, drink more water, and EXERCISE!

Be educated America, stop believing everything you hear.
and.... at the risk of sounding cliche.... if it sounds too good to be true: it probably is!

thoughts on walking.

I do not lead a very sedentary life; in fact, I am extremely active compared to the average person. Previous to living in Los Angeles, I lived in Chicago, Illinois. I sold my car before moving Chicago, so I got used to walking everywhere very quickly. I would walk to work, school, the market, to friend’s houses, and I would also find myself walking just to explore the city. Walking became a way of life for me without me really realizing it.

When I moved to Los Angeles I noticed a sense of dread when I had to get behind the wheel of my new car in order to go… anywhere. I lived in Glendale for a short while, then Santa Monica, and then Hollywood; but none of the neighborhoods seemed to fit my lifestyle of wanting to have the majority of my errand locations within walking distance of my house.

In the spring of 2010 my [now] husband and I moved to the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles mainly because of how pedestrian friendly the neighborhood is. We can walk to Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, a handful of our favorite restaurants, several bars, and even a few museums. We also make a point to walk when we need to go to the bank, to pay the rent, to go to the post office, or even to go clothes shopping at The Grove. We spend the majority of our weekends on foot, walking to the Farmers Market, to brunch, and just to walk through nearby neighborhoods on a leisurely stroll with Ziggy.

I definitely feel more “at home” when I can walk to the places that I need to visit on a daily basis.  The only major place that I have to drive my car these days is Santa Monica College for class.

Staying active definitely aids in my overall health and well-being. In addition to walking I am a runner and I practice Moksha yoga regularly. While I enjoy a wide array of physical activities there really is no substitute for walking. After a long walk (which, for Aaron and I is about 5-7 miles) I feel energized, accomplished, and more motivated to be productive for the rest of the day.

I have always known that walking daily and maintaining an active lifestyle is great for a person’s health; but, I didn't really realize HOW great it was for you. I was amazed by all of the health benefits attributed to walking that I found while doing my research for a paper for my Nutrition & Fitness class.

Here's just a few things I discovered while completing my research:
According to the American Heart Association’s webpage on the benefits of walking, startwalkingnow.org  incorporating just 30 minutes of walking a day can reduce your risk of osteoporosis and can reduce the risk of both colon and breast cancer! This is in addition to helping lower your blood sugar levels, maintaining a healthy weight, and improving your cholesterol.

In a CNN.com article called “Walking a little can go a long way”; experts at the National Sleep Foundation have found that daily walking can even improve serotonin levels, which can aid in better sleep. The same CNN.com article also mentions that researchers at the University of Texas found that walking 30 minutes per day can improve a person’s mood by relieving depression, anxiety, and even stress.

With these benefits, I think we ALL should get into the habit of walking at least 30 minutes each day. and, if you really think about it... 30 minutes per day isn't that long to ensure better mood, better sleep, and better overall health!
